14 August - Minor meltdown in Manitoba

Sidney to Portage la Prairie 60km (3168km total).

Before I knew it it was morning and I was back on the bike on the highway. I have been on the road late in the day over the last week and not had great sleep. Today marks 6 weeks on the road and I have started feeling the cumulative fatigue and my legs feel heavy in the morning. The wind is like a big bully pushing you around and shouting in your ears. Being back on Hwy 1 was also not great. I tried music, audio books, I stopped in Macgregor and had an amazing cinnamon bun and cup of tea but once back on the hwy I was really struggling.

At one point I pulled off the hwy down a little dirt road a ways and got off my bike, sat on the gravel and cried. I was exhausted physically, mentally and emotionally. I really wanted to get to Winnipeg but for the first time on this trip I just wanted to stop. I made it to Portage la Prairie and went to Tim's for some food. As usual people asked where I was going, how the riding was, how I was finding the wind etc. I really wasn't up for polite positive conversation. I had had enough of people staring, pointing and asking questions. On the drive out to Campbell River I had talked to a guy in Nipigon who did not seem like he was enjoying his ride across Canada, he said the Prairies had been long, lonely and windy and today I understood. I was in Tim's for well over an hour loathed to get back out there, I felt like I could have fallen asleep sitting at the table. I got a text from Laura asking how things were going, I replied that I was struggling and she offered to give me a call but I knew I would cry!! At that point I decided the most sensible option would be to find a motel and sleep, so I found the nearest one, checked in, showered and crashed. I slept soundly for a few hours before waking around 6pm. I had a couple of nice phonecalls with Jenn and Laura and went back to sleep for the night

Just to prove I hadn't completely lost my sense of humor!!
