31 July - Finding it hard to leave the mountains

Canmore to Cochrane 95km (1797km total).

I had already stayed 2 days in Canmore but I woke up not feeling ready to leave. I think it was a combination of not wanting to leave the mountains that I love and anxiety over what the Prairies might hold. Susie's mum cooked up a really good breakfast and we drank more tea. Finally I left just before 11am.

There are no photos from today as I didn't want to look back at the mountains and the Trans Canada was pretty uneventful. Although there was a decet sized hill at 1410m!! It was a warm sunny day and the ride towards Cochrane was pleasant. As I turned off the Trans Canada to take Hwy 22 (also known as the cowboy trail) the clouds had started building. In Canmore we had experienced late afternoon thunderstorms and the weather looked ominous. As I rode the 13km north I started to see lightning in the distance. I stopped in Cochrane for a few bits and pieces and although it was dark and thundering too amazingly I made it to Yannick and Erin's without getting wet.

I know Yannick from working with the military and I met his wife Erin briefly in the fall before they made the move west. Yannick had joined the Calgary Police and was on a night shift so I spent the evening with Erin and their super cute two and a half year old twin girls. After they had gone to bed Erin and I chatted over a cup of tea and it was great to get to know her.

  1. Somehow I doubt you've seen the mountains for the last time ;-) Maybe on this trip but not forever.
