So as not to overshadow Chris Froome and the Team Sky boys starting the Tour de France on the weekend I slipped away today. I had a really nice send off and headed south down Vancouver Island on a cool, blustery day.
It was a pleasant day and an easy start, I wish I could tell you how far but my bike computer gave up after 27km!! I am very happy with my $5 walmart bike mirror, cable tied to my drops (don't think I will be needing them much!!) and it means I can check that Bob is keeping up.
Unfortunately my gears started slipping after an hour or so and became very noisy and unreliable. I found a bike shop in Comox who were very helpful but the gears work fine unloaded on a bike stand!! Apparently carrying load changes things and I might need a new rear cassette, they offered to order one but it would take a few days. I decided I would keep moving and hope they might figure themselves out (they haven't :( ). Graham of Blacks Cycles did do a very good job of putting a stand on my bike and trailer (I had been resisting the idea but tried to stop a few times today to look at my gears and with nowhere to lean my bike it is pretty impossible).
That's all for now, more to follow on the gears I guess, tomorrow I am headed to Lantzville (just north of Nanaimo).
