19 September - La Route Verte

Orleans to Brownsburg-Chatham 99km (5957km total).

Karen left for work early but said I could stay as long as I needed. She mentioned the weather wasn't looking good for the weekend and I was really tempted to stay. I didn't feel particularly rested as the last few days had been busy and sleep had not been high on my priority list, but I knew the longer I stayed the harder it would be to leave.

There is nice riding around Cumberland on quiet roads and the leaves were starting to change colour. I took the short ferry ride across to the Quebec side and joined Hwy 148. I had heard a lot about La Route Verte, a massive network of bike trails and lanes in Quebec but I had been unable to find the book. I had checked the website and hoped to find the signs. I knew that the 148 would be fairly quiet as Hwy 50 a little further inland had been recently finished and would be the more popular and faster option in a car. I found the Route Verte signs pretty easily and a nice shoulder along the 148 which stays close to the river and was prettier on a bike than in a car.

I passed through a few small towns including the exceedingly smelly Thurso and then Parc National de Plaisance which looked pretty interesting before arriving in Montebello. The visitor info there did not have the Route Verte book but gave me a local cycling route map and I checked where I was going. I was headed to a co-operative farm near Brownsburg-Chatham that I had found on Warmshowers.

It had been a hard day, I still felt tired, it was cold, the weather was not great and I questioned whether I wanted to keep going. Being so close to home I knew I had options but I also knew that if I went back to Ottawa now that would probably be the end of the trip.

I arrived at the farm and met Jenna. She showed me where I could pitch my tent and told me a little about the farm and animals they have including some beautiful, very playful Tamworth pigs. She offered me some homemade chicken soup for dinner and then I finally had an early night. It was cold, the night before there had been a frost but I had picked up my heavier down sleeping bag and was quite cosy once I got settled.
